What is a Baby Dedication? It is a simple ceremony where the parents of a baby stand before the church congregation and promise to raise the child with Christian principles. The congregation prays for the family and also agree to help and to encourage the parents as they raise their child into a strong Christian. It doesn't really have anything to do with salvation since we believe that it is a personal choice that comes later in life. It is more of a promise by the parents to raise a child as a Christian and a declaration of their intentions.
Lauren was dressed in a pretty white dress and we stood in front of the congregation with 2 other families dedicating their babies. Our pastor led the entire congregation in a prayer of encouragement for us, the parents, to raise our babies knowing the Lord. It was really beautiful. Imagine a whole church full of people promising to help you raise your child in a loving environment! I felt so empowered with all the support from the congregation. Lauren was well behaved and enjoyed all the attention.
My nieces and nephew were able to come for the Dedication and also Lauren's Godfather. As in Catholic Baptism, Godparents are present to promise to help raise the child and guide her in her Christian walk. She's got quite a collection of Godparents now! A total of 6, two of which are in the Philippines. Afterwards, there was a church potluck and we enjoyed burgers and church-potluck-type-food. We didn't really have a big celebration since Lauren's Big Birthday Bash was coming up in a week. We did have a cake for her at the party to acknowledge this special day.
